Discussing a person's energy in the metaphysical sense - like in terms of auras or vibes - may seem "out there" for some people, but most have had experiences tied to energy even if they can't quite explain them.
- Have you ever felt drained after listening to someone complain to you for a long period of time?
- Have you ever been immediately drawn to someone for absolutely no reason?
- Have you ever joined a group and sensed that there was hostility within it, even though everyone seemed very friendly on the surface?
A person's aura is related to his or her frequency, and it can sometimes be felt pretty clearly. If you know that you are going to be around potential negativity - a toxic relative, a gossipy co-worker, a large group of strangers - it doesn't hurt to have a plan for how to safeguard and recover your energy.
Preparing
Of course, the most important step in any unpleasant interaction is to set boundaries as much as possible. (Why expose yourself to toxic people that will bring you down?) Even if there's no way out of a situation involving negativity, you can still decide on boundaries about how long you will stay in it, how you can limit contact, and how you can politely escape if needed. You can also carry essential oils and/or crystals with you to stay more grounded.
Essential oils are amazing for a variety of conditions and work on many levels. Young Living (our preferred brand) has a blend called White Angelica specifically for protection from negative energy, and their blend Valor was created "to inspire confidence and courage". Other helpful oils include calming Lavender and grounding Frankincense, but choose whatever resonates best with you. Apply or sniff the oil before and after the negative interaction to raise your frequency and settle yourself.
Crystals are found in nature and often sold in rough or polished smaller pieces. Every crystal has its own attributes, and if you want to protect your energy, black tourmaline quartz, obsidian, and amethyst are a few good options. Wearing them as jewelry is an easy way to have them on you, but if you can keep a crystal in your pocket, you can use it as a worry stone to rub when you're feeling anxious. Buying a crystal cut into a shape like a heart or an angel can also give you another cue to act in love or faith.
Decompressing
Negative interactions can cause lingering feelings of disharmony, so you may want to purposefully wind down from them. Earthing - basically touching bare skin to the earth - can help you center yourself, as can deep breathing and practicing a few moments of mindfulness. Salt is one way to clear crystals, and it can also work for our bodies! Soaking in a tub with sea salt or using a salt scrub in the shower can wash away any stuck energies.
An encounter that left a deeper impact on you may require some forgiveness work. If you've tried the recommendations above and are still feeling off and/or ruminating over what was said, what you could have said, etc., then consider pursuing forgiveness exercises or even speaking with a therapist to let go.
If you've read this blog post and still think all of it is nonsense, that's okay! Your internal organs work day and night whether you believe in them or not, and your aura does too. If anything, maybe you'll be drawn to walk barefoot in your yard after a particularly taxing day, not knowing or caring that earthing is re-centering your energies. On the other hand, if you think this topic is fascinating and want to know more, we highly recommend the book Vibe. The author discusses frequencies in more detail and shares more options to increase your vibrations (and who doesn't need that?!).
